We have been up to some pretty awesome stuff lately. As you may or may not know I am more than a wedding photographer in the Tampa bay area. I love wedding photography and all it involves but sometimes I have to do MAN stuff! and band photography happens too be one of those man things I love to do. Hanging out with a good band and having a beer while we take pictures is pretty fun way to do the job.

I have  been in bands for a while both professionally on different labels and for fun, so doing band photography is just a natural step for me to take. I know and understand wanting to be the coolest looking band in the world or just having the coolest looking band pictures taken by the best band photographer in Tampa or whatever area you are in. Band photography in the Tampa area is lacking in coolness. Yes, In order to get really great shots you have to pay for it and i get people all the time asking if i can come down on the price because “we just finished recording our record” You found the money for you record didn’t you? Your image is the second most important thing that sells you. You cant skimp on it. Record labels spend tons on an image for their artist. IMAGE IS EVERYTHING in this world. Why do people pick up a record in in the store?… Because it looks cool! Don’t get a $100 photographer to do crappy pictures of your band. Get some really awesome band photography by someone who knows how to make you look great!

I know what i would want in a band photographer so i can give it to the bands around the world if that’s the way it happens to go. I am striving to become the best band photographer in Tampa first then keep moving out into the WORLD!! Yeah!!

If you are a band in the Tampa, Clearwater, St.Pete area and need really cool band pictures by a really great band photographer give me a call as soon as you can to get on the schedule because we get booked – like – crazy!

Good News

12-1 Photography is now offering insane head shots for models, actors, actresses, and corporations in the Tampa Bay area. Reid and I strive on excellence, so naturally we’re striving to be the premiere Tampa head shot photographers. This kind of happened out of nowhere, we took some shots of some people, did a little research, and realized that we have a great time just hanging out with people in our home studio in Tampa and getting some awesome head shots of them in the meantime. This doesn’t mean we’re done being awesome wedding photographers, we just have too much fun with head shots to pass it up. It’s a lot of fun focusing on evoking emotion out of people, and trying to get the best looks for their portfolio. We recently spent some time with Victoria in the studio and came out with some great shots. Here’s just a couple pictures. More to come.

Victoria is from the Tampa area and plays in a great cover band named Blistered, of which we happened to photograph as well.. here’s their band pictures. Maybe they can come out to your wedding in Tampa and play for you… maybe?

Anyways, we had a great time doing Victoria’s head shots, she was a lot of fun to work with and was well versed on how to use her eyes to create emotion, which is always important.

So if you’re a model, actor, actress, corporation, or just someone who wants some really nice, stunning portraits remember your NEW premiere Tampa Headshot Photographers, 12-1 Photography.

We’ve got a lot more photos of Victoria that we’ll post soon. Just couldn’t wait to share.

Jennifer & Bobby’s wedding is coming up in February so we needed to get their engagement pictures done really soon. They have been working on their house all year or have been out of town and we haven’t been able to do their pictures. The only day we both had open just happened to be the coldest day in Tampa’s history! I don’t actually know the high for the day but I think it was around – 30 – Thats freakin cold! We all had fun though!

Mine and Matt’s fingers were so numb it was hard to feel the knobs to change camera settings and of-course when you are that cold it’s just funny! Looking at the first picture, you’d never know it was that cold. Jennifer didn’t want all the pictures to be bundled up shots so she decided to brave the cold!

We walked around Ybor for a while, wracking our frozen brains for shots for their engagement session and finally decided on getting hot chocolate at a local shop called the Bunker. The bunker is a really great coffee and cafe place with local art on the walls and a really cool atmosphere that makes you want to stay. If you get a chance while visiting Tampa, go there!

Here’s a few more shots we had the awesomely fun privilege of photographing for this really great couple. Can’t wait for the wedding!

Bobby decided to reenact the way he asked Jennifer out – Pretty freakin funny!

Heather!

Greg! The day started at Heather’s parents home on St. Pete beach in the treasure island area. The house was filled with ladies getting ready for the big day and having fun! After all were ready they piled in a limo and headed for the church. Heather and Greg were married in St. Petersburg Florida at St. Raphaels Catholic church. There was excitement in the air and lots of emotion. The doors opened and after everyone was at the front Heather and her father appeared in the door. Her father was beaming with joy and Heather was crying all the way down the isle. Greg looked so excited as his new bride came near and gave her the look all grooms give – (Its the I love you, am going to provide for you and our future is going to be great together – look!) as Heather laid he head on her fathers shoulder . This wedding was the sweetest ceremony we have had the privilege to capture. I (Reid) found myself watching and crying half the time. My tears kept blurring my vision through the camera and I was just hoping for a few good focused shots. Luckily I have Matt there for moments like that. I’m sure we don’t both cry at the same time! This was a great day and we really feel so blessed to have been trusted to capture the pictures for such a wonderful wedding. Here’s a few pictures from the wedding and reception.

The reception was held at Gulfport Casino in St. Petersburg.

We had the great opportunity to do some  family photography in the Tampa area for some really great friends of ours, the von dem Bussche’s! Yep its pretty hard to say.  We had a lot of fun running around the neighborhood in Apollo Beach. The kids were awesome and of-course  didn’t want to sit still so we made the best of it and it was great! Tampa has many great places with opportunities for great family photography ya just gotta search em out.

The beach is always great for pictures but sometimes your own neighborhood is really cool too! We love doing lifestyle photography anywhere. Lifestyle family photography is us taking pictures of a family doing their thing ( being a family ) at the place of their choosing and capturing the interaction. Its all the little things – The little look a daughter givers her father when she’s asking for a snack or wants him to swing her around or mom and day trying to keep the kids calm to take a picture. That’s great stuff! Real life! I love it! Don’t try to make something happen, have fun and let life happen as it does!

Here’s a few more pictures from our Awesome Family Lifestyle Photography Photoshoot with the von dem Bussche’s

Thanks a lot Carl & Kristin for letting us hang out with ya!

Gardens and Dancing | Marriah and Yahya

This couple was super fun! I don’t think we’ve encountered such good dancing at a wedding as we witnessed at this one. We started our day photographing Marriah and Yahya getting ready in separate rooms at Ponce De Leon Hotel in Downtown St. Petersburg. The rooms at the Ponce De Leon Hotel are really awesome, it’s a boutique hotel with sleek, cool, attractive rooms that are more like one bedroom apartments than hotel rooms. Marriah spent her time in the Hotel getting her hair done, while Yahya and the guys ironed their shirts and got dressed.

Ponce De Leon Hotel

95 Central Avenue
Saint Petersburg, FL 33701
(727) 550-9300

After Marriah’s hair was done and the guys were dressed we all headed to beautiful and historical Sunken Gardens in St. Pete, Florida, the same place we photographed Kristen and Sai’s wedding.

As soon as Marriah had her makeup done, put her dress on, and finished strapping up her shoes, grabbed her flowers and said a quick hi to her proud father we moved straight out to a beautiful open area in the gardens where her and Yahya were then married.

Sunken Gardens

1825 4th Street North
St Petersburg, FL 33704-4397

They were happily married and the sun was setting on the garden so we had to rush for the wedding portraits and got caught in the dark but made the best of it.

After some fun strolling the stunning pathways at Sunken Gardens with Marriah and Yahya for bridal portraits, we made our way into the reception hall, where the party began and was hosted by our good friend and Favorite DJ

Mr. Ronald Michel of Universal Music Entertainment He seriously knows how to get the party started and keep it going!

Now, our typical groom will spend more time being a wall flower trying not to dance than anything else, but Yahya was not our typical groom. Yahya kept the party going by dancing, laughing, and making sure that everyone was having a great time!

Yahya even performed a little dance for Marriah before he removed her garter.

This was one fun wedding! Sunken Gardens in St. Petersburg is THE place in for a garden themed wedding. The ambiance at the gardens cannot be beaten, and the facility hosts many great weddings. We hope to shoot here again soon.

Thank you so much, Marriah and Yahya, for giving us the opportunity to document your fantastic day!

Matt and I were able to photograph a band in Ybor city which is in the Tampa Bay area. Yes we usually photograph weddings, engagements, cool families and events. We are always doing other shoots and welcomed to opportunity to do this. Now, if we could just got Anberlin or some other band or artist as well that would be great!

Blistered is a local cover band that plays songs at  all types of events and weddings. The reason for this photo shoot was to get some pictures so they could use them for advertising for more upscale events. We had a really great time taking their pictures and hanging out in the Italian Club in Ybor. I had the privilege of bringing my 7 year old son to his first photo shot with dad! He also had a great time carrying his camera around and copying everything i did. If you need a great cover band for any event get Blistered here.

We were contacted by this really great couple a few months ago to photograph their engagement and their wedding!  We set the date for the engagement photo’s and went out to shoot at the location where Matt proposed! It was going to be a perfect location to shoot. It started sprinkling a little and we thought it would be fine. We walked down the boardwalk as the rain got a little heavier, I thought no problem its Florida, It’ll stop in a few min and we’ll be great. It didn’t stop -EVER! It rained extremely hard and we tried to force a few pictures out since we had gone through so much planning to do this.

We did capture this picture which i think is cool.

university of tampa engagement picture

Heidi was a little upset with the rain and we agreed to reschedule her engagement shoot after the rainy season.

Its the day of the new engagement shoot and the weather has been great for a while! We decided to do their other engagement pictures at the University of Tampa which is the place for engagement photography. We ran across two or three other photographers that day, all shooting engagement pictures! As soon as we got there it started raining again! It would rain and stop off and on. So we hopped out for some shots when it would stop and back in when it started again. Here are a few shots from the day.

My Top Five Tips for a Second Photographer | Matt

December 16th, 2009

tampa wedding photography

Most of the top wedding photographers in the U.S. use a second photographer. Top-Ten wedding photographer Jasmine Star actually uses her husband JD, which is a direction a lot of wedding photographers are going. A second photographer acts not only as an extra photographer, hence the name, but also assists the main photographer. Here’s a list of my responsibilities as a second photographer to Reid.

- taking shots that Reid can’t get due to time constraints

- capturing candid moments such as smiles, laughs, and tears that Reid may have missed, either because he’s taking portraits, or just focusing on a different area of the wedding.

-compiling the same-day slideshow to be played during the reception

-helping Reid with lighting such as flash placement, and adjustments

Jasmine Star’s husband JD posted a blog not too long ago of his top 10 tips for second photographers, it’s a great read and I highly suggest it. Inspired by this, I decided to hand out my  top 5 tips for a second photographer. So, here goes, Pay attention.

Tip # 1  Stay Out of the Shot! –  Awareness is key.

tampa wedding photography

I know this is kind of a no brainer, but you’ll be surprised how difficult it can actually be, especially when you’re working with a photographer who moves around a lot like Reid. At times it’s quite difficult because you’re cramped in a small dressing room, bathroom, or bedroom. I find that the best thing to do in this situation, is to shoot the same subject from a different angle, always making sure to keep yourself out of the other photographer’s shot. Many times, Reid will be shooting a bride looking at herself in the mirror from behind, while I’m off to the side capturing her profile. The reception can be difficult as well. Most dance floors are four sided, typically if Reid is shooting on one side, I’m shooting on either adjacent side directing my shot towards the middle of the floor. So if Reid is shooting from the front side of the dance floor, I’ll make sure to be shooting from either the left or right side of floor, never from the opposite side. In short, a general rule of thumb will be to always be aware of where the main photographer is and what direction he or she is shooting in but never shoot over their shoulder which leads us to our next tip.

Tip # 2 Don’t Duplicate the Shot!

Tampa Wedding Photography

As a second photographer, your main responsibility is to capture DIFFERENT shots. The last thing a photographer needs is a different version of the same shot. Never, I repeat, never shoot over the main photographer’s shoulder, especially if you plan on capturing the same image. When Reid is taking a shot that I may have wanted to get, I think to myself “Good, I’m glad that the couple will have that shot.” It doesn’t matter who gets the shot or not, as long as your clients are receiving the pictures you think they should get. Typically if Reid is shooting portraits, I’ll take that time capture some detail shots, or candid photos of the bridal party standing around, anxious to get to the cocktail hour. I look at it this way, I get to challenge my creativity from shot to shot, making sure that I am getting shots that Reid isn’t.

Tip # 3 Be Helpful!

If your main photographer needs to change the batteries in his or her flashes, do it for them. If they need to move a light, do it for them. If they need a bottle of water, get it for them. As a second photographer, it’s not only your job to take pictures, but to also make sure the day runs smoothly. This is a pretty straight forward tip. Don’t be big headed! Remember, your clients hire you because you both take great shots, and because you never have problems with equipment, timing, and courtesy.

Tip # 4 Be Knowledgeable

The more you know about photography, the better. Chances are, you’re well versed on how to deal with certain lighting conditions and flash placement, but make sure you can correct problems on the spot. If you’re able to place lighting in exactly the right position without your main photographer asking you to move it a little this way, or a little that way, portraits will take no time at all. This takes a little time with your colleague to get to know where they like their lights, but make sure that it’s a subject of conversation and discuss what he or she likes, before the wedding. Also, know your equipment, as well as your main photographer’s equipment. Know the limitations of your camera, If you know that you can’t bump your camera up to a high enough ISO to capture a certain low lit shot, but you know that your main photographer can with their equipment, tell them. Sometimes it’s best to suggest a shot to your main photographer rather than taking it yourself only to find that it’s noise town.

Tip # 5 Be Ready!

Know your company. Know what your packages entail, know your schedule, know how much you charge, know everything there is to know about your own company. A lot of times, guests at weddings will come to talk to me, especially if I’m holding lights for Reid or if he’s off taking bridal portraits while I’m working on a same -day slideshow. Guests will ask all kinds of questions, from if you offer discounts for a slew of different circumstances, to questions like “How many pictures do you take?” Make sure you take in your business information like a sponge and remember details, because let’s face it, you don’t want to sound dumb to a guest. Another point of interest, always always always carry business cards on you. Sometimes, a guest will see you working your tail off, realize that you’re probably pretty awesome at what you do, and simply ask for a business card so you can get back to work. A general rule of thumb here is to treat every guest as a potential client.

If you have any more tips that you think may be helpful, just drop in a comment!
